Myths about Kamala Harris


Claim: Harris isn't eligible to be president because her parents weren't citizens when she was born.link

Presidents must be natural born Citizens. According to the 14th Amendments, parents do not need to be citizens in order for a baby to be a natural born citizen

Claim: Harris is a DEI hirelink

Some folks believe she has only gotten this far in politics because she is Black and a woman. This theory fundamentally misunderstands the point of DEI, and her experience in public service which far exceed the political experience of folks such as George W. Bush, Reagan, Ted Cruz, etc.

Claim: Harris locked up 1900 black men for marijuana when she was a DAlink

Here's the facts and the context:

  • Her department prosecuted 1,956 people of all races for marijuana crimes when other serious crimes were also charged. 45 of them spent time in state jail.
  • Her department policy was not to prosecute simple marijuana possession.
  • She implemented a program to divert first time offenders from jail and provide education and assistance. If they completed the program, their charges were expunged.
  • Even defense prosecutors at the time said she was the most progressive DA in regards to marijuana they had ever had.
  • Because there was a surge of crime prior to her tenure, there was a focus on fully prosecuting crimes for drug dealers. But even then most marijuana charges were routinely pleaded down.
